Interview Title: Kalafina: Harmony From Heaven

The brainchild of composer Yuki Kajiura who is responsible for many anisongs from popular series such as Pandora Hearts, both Gundam Seed & Seed Destiny, Tsubasa Chronicle, Noir and the latest Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Kalafina has gone on from their Kara no Kyokai days to having 3 studio albums, 9 singles and 1 DVD to their name.

POPCulture Online’s Editor Elliott Danker gets up close and personal with Keiko Kubota, Wakana Ōtaki & Hikaru Masai from popular anisong group, Kalafina.

POPCulture Online: What is it like to work with a well-known composer/producer such as Yuki Kaijura-san?

Kalafina: She’s a great producer so we feel very proud to be working with her. The quality of her work is very high so we always feel that we have to train ourselves everyday to be better and to step up in the market.

POPCulture Online: Kalafina has a very distinct fashion style. How would you describe your style?

Kalafina: The costumes are designed for our songs because each song has it’s own unique taste. Our costumes include some mid European styles, especially the corsets which we think are very unique.

POPCulture Online: The three of you are just gorgeous. Any beauty tips for our female readers?

Kalafina: Well honestly we try our best to look good all the time because we want to use that as a way to get the audiences attention. So we always take good care of ourselves and watch our fashion styles so that we can continue to get the crowd’s attention the moment we step on to the stage.

POPCulture Online: Since 2007, Kalafina has released 3 albums and 9 singles. What would you attribute this success to?

Kalafina: We are very glad and grateful for this success and our songs have become popular through Anime. Many people watch Anime and through this more fans get to know about our songs so as a result we have a greater following.

POPCulture Online: What’s next for Kalafina?

Kalafina: We always appreciate that we can keep singing and continue to release more singles and albums. We also appreciate that through AFA our songs have become more popular and now we’re here to perform at this festival.
We would like to go to other countries and hope for more opportunities with different audiences from different parts of the world.

POPCulture Online: If there were someone (a band or singer) you could collaborate with, who would it be?

Kalafina: There are so many other talented artistes in the world we would love to collaborate with but right now we really want to concentrate on developing as artistes ourselves. If the opportunities arise one day then definitely we would be open to collaborating with other artistes.

POPCulture Online: How do you feel about performing at AFA11 and do you have any special message for your fans?

Kalafina: We are looking forward to performing at AFA11 and we are very glad and grateful to be here. We aim to create a very cheerful atmosphere! Given the chance we’d love to come back here to Singapore for more performance opportunities.

Indeed Kalafina performed to an absolutely ecstatic crowd on Day 3 of the I Love Anisong concert series. It was clear that fans from all over the region came down to support their favorite act and will be looking forward to seeing that take the stage in Singapore again hopefully sometime soon.

Do watch out for POPCulture Online’s coverage of the I Love Anisong concert during AFA11, coming soon.
