Translator note: “katan” ( カンタンカタン ) here is onomatopoeia. Jisho translates it as “clattering”. I added the clink-clink for extra effect, trying to keep the onomatopoeia even in English.

konna ni harewataru kugatsu no mabushisa kokoro wa karappo |
In such a cloudless September’s brightness, my heart is empty |
shizunde yuku you na omotai karada o tebanashite miru |
My body is so heavy that it feels like it’s sinking, I try to let go of it |
When the dream world that used to be empty turns its back on us, we shoot just our eyes out the window of the steam train that’s rattling and shaking, beyond the blue sky |
karappo no jikan o kishimu reeru no koe ga dokomade hakobu mirai toka ja nakute tada tooi dake no basho ni yukitai |
The voice of the creaking rails carry the empty time everywhere, not to the future or something, I’d just like to go to a far away place |
tantan to rizumu kanjou ga tokete tomatte iru karada dake o karakara to meguru sharin ni nosete namae no nai aoi machi e hakobarete yuku yo |
The feelings melt in the background rhythm I just put my halted body on board on the wheels that are turning and clattering, and I am being carried to a pale street that has no name |
toki o hashiru kisha no naka katankatan kantan ni nagasarete kumo dake ga hikaru karappo no kokoro ni nanika katankatan hikarabita gogo ni hibiku ekoo |
Inside the steam train that’s running in time it’s clattering, clink-clink, only the clouds that flow simply are shining In my empty heart something’s clattering, clink-clink, an echo resounding in the dried-up afternoon |
omotaku kakaekomu kibou to iu nimotsu o kyou wa oite kita sansan to furisosogu aki no ichinichi ga tada koko ni aru |
I carry in my arms a heavy luggage called “hope”, but today I left it behind, only this single autumn day that’s pouring down bright light is here |
toumei na keshiki kaze ga fuwafuwa omosa no nai machi o sugiru monokuro eiga o yami no naka kara mitsumeru you na awai dake no mabushisa o nukete |
In the transparent landscape an unsteady breeze is exceeding the weightless street Only a faint brightness, like staring at a monochrome movie from inside the darkness, is being released |
nemutai kisha wa susumu yo katankatan kantan ni dokomademo yukeru ki ga shiteru karappo no hazu no kokoro ga katankatan nanika ga hitotsu koborete ochita toki o hashiru kisha no naka |
A sleepy steam train is going forward clattering, clink-clink, giving us the feeling that we can simply go anywhere My heart was supposed to be empty but it’s clattering, clink-clink, something spilled out of it |
Inside the steam train that’s running in time it’s clattering, clink-clink, though I wish we could simply go anywhere The clouds disappeared, it was just blue, it was a very beautiful day |
kanji lyrics from booklet, romanji by sprinterXkyrie, translation by yuki.n
That meguru should be mawaru
As usual, Yuki kajiura write the lyrics like a beautiful poem without unnecessary repetition. Love it! thank you yuki.n for such beautiful translation
Unless there’s some secret in the booklet kanji, the word “machi” should be translated as “city” or “town,” not as “street.” “Michi” is “path/street.”
I haven’t read the booklet lyrics but isn’t “kantan datta yume no sekai ga” supposed to translate to “The dream world that used to be easy/simple”? and not “empty”?
