Basics
A new project created and produced by Yuki Kajiura in 2007, to perform the theme songs for Kinoko Nasus film series: Kara no Kyoukai. Only two vocalists appear to have been involved in the first single: Wakana and Keiko, though they were not identified by name. It had been suspected that those two were the vocalists of Kalafina, but it was not confirmed until the first Dream Port 2008 (former site) concert held on April 29, 2008.
Two more vocalists were introduced after the release of oblivious, in the photo shown above. The third and fourth members were revealed to be Maya and Hikaru, on May 23, 2008. All four members participated in sprinter/ARIA, and Maya was absent from the two subsequent singles: fairytale and lacrimosa. Their first album, Seventh Heaven was released in March 2009. In May 2009, Sony officially announced that Maya will no longer be participating in Kalafina, which will continue as a group of three vocalists: Keiko, Wakana, and Hikaru.
In May 7, 2009 a new Kalafina single titled storia was announced for release in July 1, 2009. The song was used as ending theme in episode 9 of NHK’s live action documentary series Rekishi Hiwa Historia for which Yuki Kajiura scored the music, instead of the ending background music that was used in the rest of the episodes. As Yuki Kajiura had methion, storia, is the “japanese language version” of the Rekishi Hiwa Historia theme of which lyrics are in Yuki’s made up language.
In August 26, 2009, at the live event Kalafina LIVE 2009 “storia” , a brand new song named Progressive was performed. A single for this song was released in October 28, 2009. The Limited edition of the single was also containing a DVD with Progressive PV, live performance of love come down, Ongaku and Mata Kaze ga Tsuyoku natta from Kalafina Closed Premium Live on May 19, 2009 and video of the TV programme”utatane” broadcasted on July 18, 2009.
In November 9, 2009 there was announced by the Kalafina site that they will perform the Opening Theme song for the anime Sora no Woto , titled Hikari no Senritsu with single release on January 20, 2010. In the live event Kalafina LIVE 2009 “progressive” there was announced that they will be singing the theme song of the animated movie Eve no Jikan, titled I have a dream. In the same event was also announced that Kalafina’s 2nd album is in production and will be released in spring 2010 (later was confirmed as March 17, 2010). Later was announced that I have a dream will be included in the album, titled Red Moon, which will also include the main theme song of the online game 信長の野望 (Nobunaga no Yabou), titled Hoshi no Utai.
On May 13, 2010 they released their first sheet music book titled “Easy Piano Solo /Kalafina” which was containing sheet music of songs from their Seventh Heaven and Red Moon albums.
On June 9th, 2010 there was announced by Sony and the Kuroshitsuji II website, that Kalafina will sing an insert theme song for the anime Kuroshitsuji II, titled 輝く空の静寂には (Kagayaku sora no Shijima ni wa). On July 13, 2010, the Kalafina official site announced that the song will be released as single, on September 15, 2010.
Kalafina began their live performances opening for Yuki Kajiura LIVE concerts. In April and July 2008, they performed the opening act of the Yuki Kajiura live volumes #1 and #2, and on December 27, 2008, they performed the opening act of the Yuki Kajiura live vol #3. In 2009, they performed at several collaboration concerts with other artists, a fanclub event, and a closed live event for raffle winners who had purchased their album or lacrimosa single. They made their first international appearance at Anime Boston 2009 on May 22-24, 2009, and did their first open one-man live on August 2009.
